College of Life Sciences

 

In 1997, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University began enrolling students in the National Biology Science Base Class. To meet the rapid development needs of modern life sciences, the College of Life Sciences was established in 2001, gathering elite talents from across the university's life science fields. Since its establishment, the college has implemented the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, adhered to the educational policy of “integrating moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education,” and remained committed to the mission of “cultivating talents for the Party and the country.” The college advocates the spirit of “pursuing excellence, perfection, and harmony,” focuses on discipline construction, optimizes the educational environment, continuously innovates talent training models, and cultivates a new generation of individuals who can shoulder the responsibility of national rejuvenation in line with national strategic needs. It aims to build a strong, distinctive, and influential high-level research and teaching college both domestically and internationally. 

In the fifth round of national discipline assessment, the biology discipline of the college received a B+ rating and was classified as a “3+1 key discipline” by the university. According to the 2023 ESI discipline progress analysis report, the college ranked first in the university in contribution to four disciplines: chemistry, biology and biochemistry, interdisciplinary studies, and clinical medicine. It also ranked first in overall contribution to 22 disciplines (15.62%). In the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the college's life sciences, sciences, engineering, and other disciplines were listed among the top. 

Faculty Team

The college currently has 116 full-time teachers, with 85.3% holding doctoral degrees. Among them, there are 23 professors, 54 associate professors, 14 doctoral supervisors, and 55 master's supervisors. The faculty includes one Changjiang Scholar, one National Excellent Young Scholar, one National Model Teacher, one national-level talent from the “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project,” one teaching master from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, one expert with outstanding contributions from the National Youth, one expert enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, one New Century Excellent Talent from the Ministry of Education, one representative of the National People's Congress, one member of the 14th Central Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party, and one vice-chairman of the 14th Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party in Fujian Province. 

Disciplinary System

The undergraduate programs offered include: Biological Sciences (including Biological Science and Biotechnology), Biological Engineering, and Bioinformatics. The college has laid a solid foundation for its undergraduate programs through strong faculty and excellent educational conditions, having developed the Biological Science, Biotechnology, and Biological Engineering programs into national first-class undergraduate programs. The Biological Engineering program has been accredited by the Ministry of Education. The Biological Sciences program is a national-level characteristic program, and an innovative experimental class (Biological Sciences) has been established by selecting outstanding first-year students from the university's science and engineering disciplines.The college has a complete talent training system from “undergraduate—master—doctor—postdoctoral,” with master's and doctoral programs in biology, a postdoctoral research station, and a professional master's degree program in biology and medicine, which are key disciplines of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Fujian Province key disciplines, and Fujian Province characteristic key disciplines. 

Educational and Research Platforms

The college provides a comprehensive experimental training platform for talent cultivation, ranging from foundational to professional and innovative entrepreneurial practices. It currently has the National Edible Mushroom Variety Improvement Center Fujian Provincial Sub-center, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Biological Pesticides and Chemical Biology, three Fujian Provincial Key Laboratories, two provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers (Biology and Chemistry), two provincial-level excellent teaching teams, two provincial-level innovative experimental zones for talent cultivation, one provincial-level innovative base for graduate education, one on-campus biological engineering training base, and over 20 off-campus internship bases. The college has established five national first-class undergraduate courses, one national-level excellent course, and one national-level resource-sharing course. 

Talent Cultivation

The college currently has 1,157 full-time undergraduate students, 729 master's students, 159 doctoral students, and 21 international graduate students (master's and doctoral). In recent years, students have undertaken over 60 national and provincial-level innovation and entrepreneurship projects. They have won first and second prizes in the national Challenge Cup competition, gold and silver medals in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, first prize in the National Undergraduate Life Science Competition, and silver and bronze awards in the National Finals of the China International College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. More than 20 individuals have received the Fujian Province Outstanding Doctoral and Master's Thesis Awards. Alumni are active in various fields, including government, public institutions, universities, research institutes, and enterprises.
