Founded in 1958, the College of Animal Sciences is one of the oldest, most established, and traditionally predominant units at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University. The College confers doctoral degrees in Veterinary Science, professional doctorates in Veterinary Medicine, and doctoral degrees in Zoology under the discipline of Biology. It also grants academic master’s degrees in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, professional master’s degrees in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, and offers two undergraduate majors: Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. Since 2021, Veterinary Science has appeared for three straight years in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The Veterinary Medicine major has been named both a National Featured Major and a National FirstClass Undergraduate Major Construction Site, while Animal Science has been designated a Provincial FirstClass Undergraduate Major Construction Site. In the 2023 ShanghaiRanking Chinese University Subject Rankings, Veterinary Medicine placed 12th nationwide.
The College employs about 136 staff members, including roughly 90 fulltime faculty. Of these, 53 hold senior professional titles and 72 possess doctoral degrees; 16 serve as doctoral supervisors and 63 as master’s supervisors. The faculty includes more than 30 nationallevel experts, among them dualappointed academicians, chief scientists of the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), recipients of the National Excellent Youth Fund, and scholars who receive special allowances from the State Council. Over 40 provinciallevel experts also work at the College, including Fujian highlevel talents (A, B, and C categories), Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talents, members of the Fujian Hundred Talents Program and the HundredThousandTen Thousand Talents Project, and Minjiang Scholars. Three provincial master’s supervisor teams and one provincial undergraduate teaching team contribute to a wellstructured and capable faculty body.
Committed to innovation, the College advances research and technology in animal husbandry and veterinary science. In recent years it has led more than 260 national and provincial research projects, including key grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, overseas National Excellent Youth Fund projects, tasks under the National Key R&D Program, the 973 Program, and National Science and Technology Major Projects. Faculty have published over 800 papers in leading domestic and international journals. Major honors include a Second Prize of the Provincial Natural Science Award, a Second Prize of the Contribution Award from the China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, two First Prizes and one Second Prize of the Provincial Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science and Technology Award, four First Prizes and two Third Prizes of the Shennong Fujian Agricultural Science and Technology Award, and recognition as a representative achievement of Fujian Province’s 13th FiveYear Plan, along with about 30 additional provincial and ministerial research awards. Teaching accolades comprise a Second Prize for National Teaching Achievements, two Special Prizes, one First Prize, and three Second Prizes for Provincial Teaching Achievements. Faculty members have also edited seven nationally standardized textbooks.
