The College of Resources and Environment has a postdoctoral research station in agricultural resources and environment, a first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization center in agricultural resources and environment, a professional doctoral degree authorization center in agriculture, a first-level discipline master's degree authorization center in environmental science and engineering, a professional master's degree authorization center in agriculture (resource utilization and plant protection), and a professional master's degree authorization center in resources and environment. It offers three undergraduate programs: agricultural resources and environment, environmental engineering, and spatial information and digital technology. The agricultural resources and environment program was selected as a key discipline of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration in 2016, a peak discipline of Fujian Province (one of six in the university) in 2018, and a national first-class undergraduate program in 2021. The environmental engineering program has passed the engineering accreditation conducted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEET) and was selected as a Double First-Class construction discipline of Fujian Province in 2018 and approved as a first-class undergraduate program of Fujian Province in 2022.
【School History】
The predecessor of the college was the Department of Soil and Agricultural Chemistry of the former Fujian Agricultural College and the Department of Land and Environment of the former Fujian Agricultural University. The former Department of Soil and Agricultural Chemistry was established in 1958. In the 1990s, in order to meet the needs of the rapid development of the social economy, the major of Land Management and Agricultural Environmental Protection was established, and the department was renamed the Department of Land and Environment in 1994. In May 2001, when Fujian Agricultural University and Fujian Forestry College merged, the College of Resources and Environment was established.
【Faculty】
The college has 92 full-time teachers, forming a teaching staff with a reasonable academic background structure, high level and mainly composed of middle-aged and young teachers. Among them, 92% have doctoral degrees, 46% have overseas study experience, 28 are professors and 30 are doctoral supervisors. There is 1 ministerial-level innovation team, 3 provincial-level teaching teams and 1 provincial-level scientific research team. More than 30 people (times) have held positions in domestic and foreign academic organizations and academic journals, and more than 30 people (times) have received provincial-level or above talent titles; among them, there are 3 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project candidates, 2 National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 member of the American Academy of Microbiology, 2 Chinese Academy of Sciences Hundred Talents Program, 5 experts with special government allowances of the State Council, 3 Ho Ying-Dow Teacher Awards, 2 Fujian Province Outstanding Young Talents, 6 Fujian Province Distinguished Young Scholars and 1 Fujian Province Excellent Young Scholar. Two scholars were listed on the 2024 Clarivate Global Highly Cited Researchers list, and five were listed on the 2024 Elsevier China Most Cited Researchers list (10 in the whole university), among which four are from the discipline of Agricultural Resources and Environment.
【Teaching Achievements】
In the past five years, the college has built two national first-class undergraduate courses, 12 provincial online open courses (times), 14 first-class courses at the university level, four new textbooks for the 13th Five-Year Plan of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and one textbook supported by the National Science and Technology Academic Monograph Publishing Fund. It has also established one provincial virtual simulation teaching center. It has independently won one special prize for teaching achievements in Fujian Province and participated in winning one second prize for national teaching achievements and one special prize for teaching achievements in Fujian Province.
【Scientific Research】
The College of Environmental Science and Ecology has entered the top 1% globally in terms of ranking. The discipline of Agricultural Resources and Environment ranked seventh and sixth in the country in terms of comprehensive strength in 2018 and 2019, respectively, according to the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. In 2022, it ranked fourth among Chinese agricultural and forestry universities in the Nature Index. In 2021, the discipline ranked seventh among similar institutions in the country in terms of comprehensive strength according to the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. The college currently has one innovation team of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and seven provincial and ministerial-level platforms such as key laboratories of Fujian Province and key laboratories of Fujian Province universities. In the past three years, the college has undertaken key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, topics of the National Key Research and Development Program, and provincial (ministerial) level scientific research projects, etc. A total of 139 vertical scientific research projects and 256 horizontal scientific research projects have been obtained. The vertical scientific research funds amount to 130 million yuan, and the horizontal scientific research funds amount to over 85.6 million yuan. More than 500 papers have been published in domestic and foreign journals such as Cell (participated), Nature Plants, Nature Communications, ISME, Plant Physiology, New Phytologist, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Geoderma and Acta Pedologica Sinica. Five provincial and ministerial-level awards, including the First Prize of Fujian Province Natural Science Award, have been obtained.
【Social Services】
Professor Liao Hong led the science and technology extension team to the front line of agricultural production, proposing habitat optimization techniques such as intercropping selected green manure crops with high nutrient efficiency in tea gardens, achieving high-quality, efficient, and green ecological circular production of tea. She established over 10,000 mu of high-quality and efficient ecological tea garden demonstration bases in Fujian Province, radiating and driving over 100,000 mu of ecological tea gardens. She trained over 1,000 grassroots agricultural technicians and over 2,000 tea farmers. She set up demonstration points of ecological tea gardens covering over 10,000 mu and radiating over 100,000 mu, organizing training for over 1,000 agricultural technicians and over 2,000 farmers. She established soil-plant nutrient deficiency diagnosis indicators for citrus orchards, providing a scientific basis for rational field fertilization guidance in citrus orchards. Through the establishment of the Pinghe Pomelo Science and Technology Courtyard, she conducted relevant farmer training and technical guidance, training over 30,000 farmers and agricultural technicians in total. Professor Liao Hong also led the establishment of the agricultural science and technology extension team in Nanping City, a major agricultural production area in Fujian Province, providing all-round services for its agricultural development.
The UTM (Ultra-high Temperature Mesophilic) organic waste aerobic fermentation technology was invented, achieving large-scale production and application. The core patent technology has been promoted and applied in 31 enterprises in 8 provinces and regions including Guangdong and Xinjiang in China, providing technical support for the safe and resourceful utilization of agricultural and forestry waste. Participated in the point layout - risk assessment - category division - safe utilization of soil pollution investigation of over 30 million mu of agricultural land; participated in the evaluation of soil fertility grades and nutrient deficiency in over 80 counties; participated in the research and development of more than 20 industrial technologies for sludge fertilization; as the leading unit of the expert consultation group and the technical group, it is currently participating in the third national soil census in Fujian Province; created an ecological model for the governance of collapsed hills, achieving good social and ecological effects. 【International Exchange】
The college has established cooperative education programs with many overseas universities (such as the University of Illinois in the United States, the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, and Humboldt University in Germany), providing students with an international academic platform. With the support of the German potash company K+S Group, an international class for K+S professional master's students was jointly established. Every year, renowned professors such as Ismail Cakmak, the former president of the International Plant Nutrition Institute, Leon V. Kochian, an outstanding leader in Canadian agriculture, and Ma Jianfeng, the president of the International Society of Acidic Soils, are invited to teach in this class, broadening the international horizons of professional master's students.
【Talent Cultivation】
The college has consistently ranked among the top in the university in terms of the number of national-level innovative projects for college students. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, students from the college have won numerous provincial-level and above awards in competitions such as the Challenge Cup College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition and the College Students' Innovation Competition. Postgraduate students, as the main force in scientific research, have participated in key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and the Ministry of Science and Technology's Key Research and Development Program. Over 80% of doctoral and master's students have published high-quality papers. The college's youth River Little Yu social practice team has received five commendations from the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and 32 commendations from the Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League. The Pinghe Pomelo Technology Small Court, mainly composed of postgraduate students from our college, has been rated as one of the Top Ten Technology Small Courts of the China Agricultural Technology Association for consecutive years. The innovation project of the Pinghe Pomelo Technology Small Court won the Special Prize in the National Technology Small Court Competition. The story of the postgraduate students' team assisting farmers in the small court was reported by CCTV-2 and the Military Agricultural Channel, and it has received honors such as the Outstanding Practical Team in the National Summer Social Practice Activity of College and University Students' Volunteers for Culture, Science and Health Three Down to the Countryside and the Silver Award in the Fujian Province New Era Civilization Practice Volunteer Service Project Competition. The original drama Meet Green Mountains and Clear Waters with Pomelo based on the teachers and students of the small court won the third prize in the drama performance category of the Fifth Fujian Province College Students' Drama Festival and the Seventh Fujian Province College Students' Art Festival, and has carefully built a brand of ideological and political education. The college has a good academic atmosphere, and the postgraduate admission rate of undergraduate graduates has exceeded 40%, with 55% being admitted to Double First-Class universities. Among them, the postgraduate admission rate of the undergraduate major of Agricultural Resources and Environment has exceeded 50% for many years.
