To deepen cooperation between China and Pacific Island countries in the field of poverty reduction and development, accelerate poverty alleviation efforts in the Pacific Island countries, and build a closer China-Pacific Island countries community with a shared future, the China-Pacific Island Countries Poverty Reduction and Development Cooperation Center is approved to be based at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.
The center is tasked with:
- Sharing China’s theoretical and practical experiences in poverty reduction and development with government officials, experts, and scholars from Pacific Island countries;
- Organizing exchanges and discussions on poverty reduction and development between China and Pacific Island countries;
- Implementing demonstration projects for poverty reduction and development cooperation with Pacific Island countries.
The center regularly conducts training programs for officials and experts from Pacific Island countries, focusing on four key areas: agricultural poverty alleviation, industrial poverty reduction, tourism-driven poverty alleviation, and social security-based poverty reduction. It also:
- Periodically arranges visits for Pacific Island countries’ diplomatic envoys in China;
- Organizes field trips and practical training at poverty reduction demonstration sites in China for Pacific officials and experts;
- Collaborates with willing Pacific Island countries to launch poverty reduction demonstration projects.
Since its establishment, the center has hosted multiple seminars and training sessions for Pacific Island officials and experts, including:
- The China-Pacific Island Countries Poverty Reduction and Development Cooperation Symposium;
- Online training programs such as Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development in Pacific Island Countries;
- Virtual Fujian Agricultural Technology Promotion Conferences.
The center emphasizes people-to-people exchanges and youth engagement with Pacific Island nations. It has participated in hosting:
- Delegations from the Austronesian Language and Cultural Exchange Study Camp visiting Fujian;
- Trainees from the Chinese Language + Crew Skills + Aquaculture Technology practical training program visiting the university;
- Delegations of youth and women leaders from Solomon Islands touring Fujian.
These efforts aim to strengthen mutual understanding and foster long-term collaboration in poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
